Gordon Applegath was a noted UTS athlete, a key member of both the hockey team and the rugby team, which he helped to victory in the 1913 Interscholastic League championship; his teammates Franklin Ott and Gurney Ryckman were also killed during the war. In addition, Applegath was on the track and field team, and in 1911 performed a ten feet, three inches pole vault that remained a school record at least until the mid-1920s. He received a commission in the 180th (Sportsmen’s) Battalion and went overseas, where he served with distinction. The London Gazette reported that he received the Military Cross on 5 July 1918, just six weeks before he was killed in action, for his great courage and bravery in bombing operations near Passchendaele. He is buried in Wancourt British Cemetery.
